Abroad {week 11 & 12}: Croatia and Montenegro

Once again I am combining 2 weeks worth of iPhone photos. These last two weeks have been incredible but I have been traveling like crazy. On the road. Touring. Partying. Booking hostels. Missing WiFi and work but busy as a bee and I've been so happy. I feel like I'm becoming the person I've always wanted to be. (Now how to maintain this lifestyle....).

Week 11 was my last week in Spain. I left early morning on Wednesday. I didn't even get to say goodbye to Alvaro because he had left for his grandparents' house on Thursday and then went to camp the following week. That made me sad. I spent my last few days with Jaime and Paloma, and although I was sick, I tried to soak up every minute with them.

Jaime was attached to my hip. I literally had to carry him around like a baby half the day. And he cuddled like crazy with me. It melted my heart.

Paloma, the sweetest girl, actually set her alarm at 5:00 am to say bye to me literally as I was walking out of the house on the morning I had to leave. She made sure she got the timing right. She handed me a sweet note saying she loved me and I was the best. I wanted to keep hugging her.

I don't miss au pair life (message me personally if you want to know the do's and don'ts) but I miss the kids so much.

I flew to Zagreb on the 13th and since then I have visited 6 different cities and 2 new countries on my passport!

7.14 / 1:41 post meridiem // This is Strukli which is a local dish in Zagreb. It's made of locally made cottage cheese mixed with dough and baked. You can eat it sweet or savory. This dish was made with roasted peppers. ERHAMGERD. So good.

7.15 / 12:05 post meridiem // In Croatia, coffee is the drink of choice. It's very important to take time and drink a coffee with someone to talk and relax on an outdoor patio. They say even if the coffee gets cold you sit for at least an hour or two and finish it. It's also common to buy your own food and bring it to a restaurant to drink with the coffee. The restaurants don't care. They even sit outside in bad weather and deal because it's just the way they enjoy their coffee and meals.

7.16 / 2:20 post meridiem // Saturday was a rainy day. The hostel was full of people staying in that day. I walked around anyway because I did a little shopping. The dollar is strong in Croatia so it was nice. I bought 2 much needed tank tops for super cheap. Other than that, I stayed inside and hung out with the hostel workers (I LOVE the hostel I stayed at so it was fun to just stay there) and I booked hostels, drank coffee, and talked to friends.

7.17 / 11:43 post meridiem // The hostel, called Chillout Hostel, had this funny way to earn tips. I "documented" it because the Rakija is an important drink (shot) in Croatia. It's used in the morning, for sickness and health, for getting drunk, and for pure enjoyment. There are different flavors. Honey is my favorite. It's sweet and goes down smooth because it has a low alcohol content. There are other flavors like plum and blueberry that are much stronger. The shot goes down strong because the flavor transforms from the fruit to fire as it burns from your throat to your stomach.

7.18 / 8:14 post meridiem // My first Busabout trip!!!! I went from Zagreb to Split on Busabout. It was a great trip. Lovely people, great leader and Busabout worker who kept us entertained the entire time, and beautiful scenery. I took this photo because the moon over the mountain was such a beautiful thing to see. With the naked eye it looked much prettier but iPhoneography it is.

7.19 / 5:47 ante meridiem // The night before I had arrived in Split fairly late. I had to wake up at 5:00 am to catch my bus from Split to Kotor. The morning walk to the bus was so beautiful! I did miss my bus, though, because I thought I knew where the bus station was and I was wrong. Turned out that I was able to hop on another bus leaving at that moment with 1 seat left. I had to pay triple the price in the end and instead of a direct route I had to have a 4 hour wait for another bus to connect me to Kotor, Montenegro but that's the travel life for you.

7.21 / 12:41 post meridiem // Unfortunately, I do not remember the name of this traditional Montenegrin food. I went on a tour to Durmitor (MORE PICS> YAS > NATURE) and on the way there we stopped at this beautiful restaurants placed on top of a mountain outside with trees, valleys, mountains, cool air, and birds. We all shared a few plates of this food. It's like a type of mashed potato cooked with cheeses and then topped with a yogurt/milk/cream. It was creamy, tart, warm, and filling. I really loved it.

7.22 / 9:22 post meridiem // The hostel I was staying at in Old Town Kotor (Hostel Montenegro) was amazing. The dining area had a window with a large sill that I would sit on top of, about 3 stories high, and drink a beer while listening to the live music. Kotor always has beautiful music playing every night.

7.24 / 4:46 post meridiem // ANNND I'm in Dubrovnik!! I explored Old Town for a few hours. I loved its beauty and preservation of medieval architecture. It had so many museums and art galleries, jewelry and clothes shops, restaurants and ice-cream stops, fountains and steps, and so many different kinds of people.  I only stayed a few hours, though, because it's a heavily consumerist area with high prices and lots of crowds. It was also so hot that by the time I left my clothes were soaked with sweat which is simply uncomfortable. Dubrovnik is a trip I would take with a pretty budget, a romantic date, and plans to island hop and cruise around on a boat. It's a beautiful place.
